National Chess Day Pictures
Partnering with CENTRAL ATLANTA PROGRESS (CAP) to bring chess programming to downtown, former National Open Champion & IM Arthur Guo hosted a National Chess Day Celebration at the charming Broad Street Boardwalk in downtown Atlanta. The event was the first at the Boardwalk after its grand reopening this Thursday.
The celebration started with a chess simul for the first half so players could play some good slow OTB games with Arthur, then the second half was all blitz play, one on one blitz battle against Arthur and blitz among players. Q & A for Parents Whose Kids Are Interested in Competitive Chess was offered through out the event.
Attendees were college students from Emory University and Georgia State, scholastic players, veteran players from the Atlanta chess community such as IM Carlos Perdomo, and homeless players, one of them with an estimated strength of a USCF expert.
Even though the afternoon weather was a bit windy and chilly, the magic of chess brought people of different backgrounds together. Players of different skin colors, white, black and yellow; students from Georgia, New York, China, India, and Turkey; kids from 5 years old, elementary, middle school, high school to college, everyone had three hours of fun during National Chess Day.

Fundraising*
In June 2020, we launched a GoFundMe fundraising campaign to benefit frontline healthcare heroes and to support low-income school chess.
We have delivered 800 Chick-fil-A sandwiches to frontline healthcare heroes working at five metro Atlanta hospitals, including Northside Duluth Hospital, Emory Johns Creek, Piedmont Atlanta, Grady Memorial, and Gwinnett Medical Center.
We also raised enough funds for 150 complete chess sets to support chess programs in low-income schools. The free chess sets will be distributed to support starting new chess clubs during 2024 and 2025 school year.
